I’d focus on a plan underpinned by 5G that put technology at the heart Bedford, as a Town of the Future.
Work with major 5G suppliers, one or two international cities doing this well/planning to do so (Barcelona/Berlin/New York), Surrey/Kings College/5G research institutions and local business and citizen user groups to plan and deliver a Town of the Future.
Success would look like dazzling, services/retail/the town as a connected living and work space. The town would be established as a smart hub, connected to its users (
including surrounding towns/cities).
Bedford’s decline over the last 30 years is substantially a result of external factors – a couple of recessions, loss of anchor manufacturing firms & related supply chains, online retail and the success of surrounding towns and cities – MK, Cambridge.
To succeed it needs to play to its strengths – strong independent retail, some frontier tech SMEs, natural assets – parks, riverside – and use 5G to drive this.
