‘Broken Windows’ = community space

Most know that studies prove dereliction (one broken window) leads to further dereliction (nobody cares, break the rest). We should look at the large empty premises in the town as an opportunity, not an eyesore, and treat their repurposing as a priority. M&S for example, as a simple community space, could be used both day and evening, for example as a drill hall for cadets. It is central to the Market Place – activity there leads to increased ‘life’ especially in the evening, thus deterring criminal or antisocial elements. Any shop front that becomes empty could be used as an example to sell the town – museum displays in empty shop windows for example.
