It may be worth looking at how we can use a proportion of these funds to support new start ups and existing small businesses. If we can start by reducing business rates, give grants for those business ideas that have the potential to bring in more visitors and start investing in our high streets so that Carlisle, the city of Cumbria becomes a real attractor. Especially now that we have a new public airport which offers us so much potential if we seize this opportunity, before it’s too late and it closes to the public due its facilities not being utilised. If we just spend it all on highways etc this would just be a one time fix and in another few years we will be in the same place looking for more money to do it all again. By building up our local economy we can support infrastructure maintenance on a more regular basis without breaking the bank all at once.
