Car Free City

Worcester to be a car free city, an exemplar, to lead the way. Worcester City Council and Worcestershire County Council, to work together, to achieve this. Reinstate Park and Ride, across, the City, buses to have the capacity and run at a frequency, to allow social distancing. Introduce new cycle ways and secure cycle parks to enable cyclists to easily and safely travel around the City. A cleaner and more welcoming City, for locals and tourists alike, would ensue. Events and experiences, in addition to retail, would have the capacity to grow.

  1. An ideal solution, but probably not politically deliverable. There are however several ways in which car use in and around the City Centre can and should be reduced. e.g. Reducing car parking spaces, increasing parking charges, residents parking schemes and a workplace parking levy. Consideration should be given to closing The Butts to private vehicles and extending the pedestrainised areas or low traffic neighbourhoods on City Walls, Foregate Street and Lowesmoor should be considered. This should only be done alongside measures to improve public transport, active travel, bike and scooter hire and park and ride etc

  2. I Agree with Mel’s aims for the City as a Registered Nurse, Public Health should be taken seriously.
    Protecting our Residents & visiting Tourists from the effects of Vehicle Emissions & their impact on people’s Health should be taken seriously going forward.
    I look at Bridgewater & Taunton in Somerset, similar in size to Worcester. But with a well established & well used Park & Ride Service. The car is not our enemy, lack of Political Vision is ;
