there are many new houses being built around the city – what would it take to get these families to use the centre or other hubs around Wakefield? All development projects should start with research to find out what is actually needed and how to create these communities in the centre. I suggest creating free community spaces for choirs, music lessons, art and drama to pull people into the centre. Then there will be enough footfall for independent traders to be economically viable. To start with we could clean up the centre and make it feel safer for families over the weekend. It all feels a bit sad when you visit, Wood St, is really run down and the centre is tired. We need to think about what could make Wakefield vibrant rather than another town filled with national chains.
