I propose that some of Blackpool’s fund be provided to development of light rail to South Fylde. This could be separately or in support of a FHSF bid.
Public transport improves local economies by encouraging business establishment and increasing footfall. Light rail is one of the fastest growing transport modes worldwide.
Blackpool’s tramway has proven this locally, having increased passenger numbers to over 5 million per year following an upgrade to light rail.
Blackpool does not have adequately developed transport corridors southwarss. The South Fylde Line does not solve the issues discussed, due to low frequency and poor connectivity.
A tramway will solve these issues, bringing fast and frequent services linking to key areas of the town and encouraging growth. It will relieve congestion and improve accessibility.
The fund may make possible in-depth development work which will make future stages possible.
This is an opportunity that the Fylde Coast can’t afford to miss.
