The Future Towns initiative is designed to ensure that areas do not become digital ‘left-behinds’ – ‘connectivity’ is one of its specific functions. There are currently no plans by any of the commercial operators (Openreach, Virgin or ISP’s) to provide Fibre To The Premises (FTTP – ‘gigabit broadband’) broadband in Workington (or West Cumbria). It would also appear that West Cumbria is not rural enough to qualify for BDUK (Connecting Cumbria) support. Therefore, without investment from this initiative, Workington shall indeed miss-out on what all political opinions claim to regard as the most important infrastructure improvment of all. Workington should not follow some other locations (as has been reported) who have spent ALL of the Fund on road improvements – although necessary, so are other improvements to safeguard our future and ensure that our youth can continue to live and develop in our town, rather than having to leave to prosper.
