Greening the City Centre

A network of connected natural spaces should be delivered throughout the city to encourage habitat and species growth and diversity, increase human interaction with nature, provide a healthy, clean and green environment, manage water and sequester carbon.
Although the city is surrounded by extensive green and natural spaces, the city centre itself is largely a hard built environment. We need a green infrastructure programme that links the city’s green spaces throughout the urban environment. This should include street trees/hedges, green roofs and rewilding of maintained green space. Existing surface car parks, if they are to remain, present a significant opportunity for greening. As well as providing a home for nature, this will help to improve the public realm, aid mental wellbeing, sequester carbon dioxide, manage water, tackle air pollution, and help to adapt to climate change.
