Improved cycle tracks

The cycle tracks in Stevenage are its main strength. However it would be better if they were connected to towns outside of Stevenage, to improve commuting. A quality cycle track between Stevenage and Hertford, and Hitchin, and Letchworth/Baldock, and Knebworth/Welwyn, would encourage greener commuting between towns.

  1. I’d support a cycle path to Watton and Hertford. Also marking the current paths to remind people to walk on the path not the cycle lane to reduce the chances of accidents.

  2. I agree with the suggestion of connecting the cycle paths to other towns and villages and encouraging everyone to cycle on the paths, perhaps with a “boris bike” style temporary bike hire company. But I also agree that cycle paths should be better policed and tidied. Putting police and local litter pickers on bikes would allow them to experience what cyclists do everyday, so they can map areas of the cycle path network that are continually having issues.

  3. Resurfacing of all cycle tracks not just patching the holes up ensuring all over hanging hedges are cut and ensuring they are glass free every day as sometimes it stays for days and gets spread about

  4. Routes for runners and cyclists to get out and enjoy. For example In many country parks there are coloured routes and plans which provide direction and distance information. Use this model on the cycle and footpath networks across stevenage to encourage more cycling, running and walking.

  5. As a frequent cyclist I would like to maybe a have like a cycle hub. Basically what happens is that all the cycle paths lead back the hub (kind of like how all roads lead back to Rome) and at the hub it would have a small place to repair your bike or inflate your tire’s etc plus maybe a cafe too to add a social place to hangout for cyclists

  6. Build cycle path on Wedgwood Way to link the cycle path on Martins Way to Great Ashby. This would allow residents from both sides safer access to their work place.

  7. I’d love to be able to commute by bike to Welwyn G City for work.
Can we also get something like rounded mirrors mounted on sharp turns?
There are loads of sharp turns on Stevenage cycle tracks that mean you can’t see if someone’s about to come around the corner and crash into you

  8. During weekend evenings youngsters are gathering and braking bottles in cycle tracks under passes, where police patrols don’t see them.

  9. In some areas the cycle paths are not well lit for example on six hills way which makes them very dangerous at night especially when pedestrians are walking on the cycle path in dark clothing. Clearer signs to mark the cycle path and pedestrian path divide so pedestrians know where to walk would help. Also a way to report glass on the track or lights not working would be great. What about more cycle hubs or facilities to support cycling in the town centre such as public tire pumps etc.

  10. I think this would be a great idea. This would bring safety to bike riders who want to travel outside of the town on their bike.

  11. As a citizen of Watton-At-Stone, a safe cycling route between Hertford and Stevenage, via Watton-At-Stone, would be greatly appreciated, and if encouraged, may reduce traffic on the A10, and even lead to a reduction to pollution.

  12. I would definitely commute to Letchworth from Stevenage by bike if it was a safer and more direct route.

  13. If there was a safe, well maintained cycle track between Letchworth and Stevenage I would commute to work.

  14. There was talk about possible rail link between Stevenage and Luton airport the line heading south out of Stevenage then turning right and heading westbound across country to Luton airport

  15. The “on again, off again” cycle route along London Road really needs bringing up to the same standards as the rest of the network too.

  16. Agree, we have a great starting point already, why not become exemplary for all other towns/cities for creation of green-transport? Improved continuous cycle route connections are particularly required between newer developments in Stevenage itself e.g. Great Ashby, Wedgewood Way and old town / new town centre.
