The government has commented on it’s plans to develop “Freeport’s” or “Freezones” which are tax free or effective areas for foreign and regional businesses to build a base and generate the economy in a strong and robust fashion. These type of practices have been adopted by places like the UAE and the Canary Islands with a resounding success. While Warrington has a strong corporate presence in Birchwood and Buttonwood it would be great to see this type of enterprise happen close to the town centre. In turn demand would generate a new economy in the town centre and encourage links with the airports and train hubs. I genuinely believe that if Warrington is the first to do this in the UK it will be the first to benefit. I wouldn’t want to see the money used for a one off development that is then left empty the core investment needs to be a stimulus for everything else.
