Since the closure of the Darlington Arts Centre in 2012 Darlington has been without a musical performance centre. The centre used to attract some of the leading top musicians across the whole of the UK and give students the opportunity to learn and be inspired by these influential people.
A centre that included a performance space and various ensemble rooms in order for workshops to take place is deeply necessary for Darlington’s young cultural development. Student’s who lack in Academics need something else to focus there attention on and music and the arts could help reduce youth crime in the town. The Durham music service provides colleges music tuition which gives students the opportunity to learn however music cannot be purely learnt in the classroom, it needs to be learnt through experience and performance. Weekly jam nights, performances, workshops and drama would all be highly attractive to the public and if managed in the correct way will bring wealth and culture to the town.
