Milton Keynes covers at least 34square miles, nearly double the area of Oxford. The distance between its northern areas like Stony Stratford and southern areas like Magna Park is at least 10 miles, sometimes more eg Olney to Newton Leys is 15 miles, with similar east-west distances. Milton Keynes was built with private transport by cars in mind. Recent population and car ownership increases create congestion and delay in travel times for work or leisure. Public transport from/to the city centre is just about adequate. North/South or east/west cross city travel between by public transport is slow and problematic. A 10-20 minute car journey (depending on traffic) can easily become a 2 hour journey. The aims of carbon neutrality and economic development require a focus on an improved, sustainable rapid transit public transport system to improve MK infrastructure. This will benefit businesses as well as the wellbeing of individual citizens.
