Elm disease killed the mature trees in Fort Road which is the only route to the Fort and the Beach. The steps down to the beach have been barricaded closed because of the deterioration of the concrete steps. This sheltered beach with sand was the only safe area for children and families on a severe and dangerous stretch of coast. The loss of the sheltered sandy beach is felt by every local and a deterrent to visitors . A fairly brutal high rise 400 bed residential and leisure development is planned and about to be approved providing negligible benefit to existing residents. The development is on land owned by the French port company who also own the beach steps – getting the beach back would be some compensation. Re-planting trees along Fort Road would restore the charm of the wide pavemented but very busy road, providing noise muting , beauty as well as bird sanctuary. Win, win, win.
