Bedford High Street and surrounds were once buzzing and busy with a range of shops and leisure activities. This has dwindled in recent years due to the significant rates bills imposed on small retailers and businesses and therefore lack of interesting or decent shops. The recent investment into the riverside seems to be ignoring the main problem around Silver Street/Harper Street. We need to help small businesses with rates relief to encourage interesting boutique local stores, limit the number of charity and payday loan stores and improve communal areas. The leisure facilities need to be improved but not more Costa Coffees. Indoor golf (like swingers or treetops), delis, places for brunch, communal gardens, places to sit, enough reasonably priced parking facilities.
