It is known that the desirability of an area always increases if a place can accommodate artist, designers and creatives – this is due to the catalyst effect these individuals have.
Independent cafes, pop-up art galleries, exciting bars and experimental restaurants are just some of the establishments that follow in an area that is a hive of creativity. This is something that Stevenage needs! You just need to look at places like Dalston and Peckham in London.
I am suggesting that Stevenage Council creates free or cheap-to-rent studio spaces for artists and creatives, either in the disused retail units or in purpose-built spaces. These Studios should always remain free or cheap-to-rent despite any development that might occur due to their existence.
Once created we should then market the spaces to locals colleges and educational institutes, along with those creatives living in London who can’t afford the now expensive spaces available.
