If you want to attract an ageing population (aka the recent research) to spend time in the town centre, as well as families, people need places to sit/rest and somewhere to go to the loo that is clean, open, accessible & free! The public toilets that used to be at the back of All Saints Church were ideal. Homelessness issues need resolving, potholes & pavements mending, litter/rubbish removing and a good clean! Make it a nice place to go with nice shops and people will go. And please let the market square be a proper traditional market like it used to be – so many traders left when the rents when up and there are plenty of other spaces around town for outdoor events plus 2 theatres etc for entertainment. The trouble with Northampton is that it’s always trying to be something it’s not – let it be the very best County town that it can be, with its rich heritage, agriculture, great food producers, small businesses, fantastic craftspeople, just all needs pulling together.
