Many people, particularly families, are enjoying cycling on quieter roads during lockdown, and will continue to do so if they feel safe. A lot of simple, safe segregated cycleways could be installed for £25 million. There are data that most car journeys are only a couple of miles, so reducing the need for car use in this way would also reduce congestion and air pollution in Hereford, in accordance with addressing the Climate Emergency. Many people still assume that a bypass is the answer to city congestion, but as so little traffic is through traffic, a bypass could not help. Better, reliable public transport networks are also required, so that people have a choice not to use their cars. Many people are getting used to working from home, with more meetings online. Many companies see the benefits of continuing this after lockdown, but better, faster broadband coverage across Herefordshire will be essential.
