Support for charity helping refugees and asylum seekers

Increased funding for Pendle New Neighbours, a local charity offering support to refugees and asylum seekers in Nelson. This group offers English language teaching and guidance for newly arrived and current refugees and asylum seekers. As well as a regular drop-in session on Thursday afternoons in Christ Church it also offers day visits to local tourist sites to show the delights of the Lancashire countryside. It also provides home support for families and household items such as clothes, bedding etc. from donations. Further funding could provide IT training for the refugees which would enable them to look for paid employment. It could also rent a property in Nelson to provide a permanent base for the charity. This would help to integrate the refugees with the local community which would lead to self-sufficiency. It would also enlighten locals about refugees generally instead of misinformation in the media.
