A focus has to be placed on attracting young professionals to live in Rotherham who can not afford the rents and purchase prices of properties in Sheffield with a focus on the excellent travel links with the X1 Bus, train and tram train. Also prime riverside sites in the town centre should not be designated for affordable housing. The core retail area needs to contract and more people need to live in the town centre (conversion of upper parts of shops to residential) to help make a more compact retail sector viable. The town centre can not compete with Meadowhall, Parkgate etc so needs to offer something different such as a market town with independent traders with a limit on certain use class occupiers.
