Scunthorpe town centre feels less safe now. Crime has gone up, there are less police patrols and shoppers are always exposed to the elements. I’ve heard about shoppers being attacked in daylight hours. Wind from the west or east blows directly along the High Street. Ice, rain and squall weather hamper shoppers.
If part of the existing High Street was covered-over, like Southgate Mall, it would help protect vulnerable shoppers from the elements. A couple more security guards or police patrols might help reduce crime and make people feel safer, also. A mall area like Southgate is easier for security staff to manage, as they create a controlled environment for them to protect.
If some of the empty shops elsewhere in the town were repurposed to social housing or offices, the remaining shops can take advantage of the mall area. So long as rates are not increased, of course!
