Entertainment Centre

Encourage people to stay in the area with an entertainment complex with Mini golf, bowling, bars, venue for bands etc. This will provide entertainment for families, teenagers and older people which we currently do no have.

Roads

Don’t just patch up our road network, it really is false economy. Complete a proper job on them by resurfacing them in entirety for the whole length of the road.

new sports arena

the town needs a new sports arena that could also hold events, the current leisure centre is too small to host events of a sporting or competitive manner. Kendal has a huge leisure and sports facility.

Youths

General Tidiness

I would like to see more money put into the general tidiness of the town, especially on the major routes into the town. With the state of the pavements, over growing weeds and bushes etc. it’s not difficult to understand why some people give little thought to maintaining the town themselves (it’s broken windows syndrome). […]

Town centre

No more tarting it up, can the council give incentives to small businesses to encourage them into the town Centre. Maybe even buy up the empty shops and offer permanently low rents to tenants to help the town thrive again, and offer free town centre parking. Tempt maybe some of the small breweries that are […]

It’s often cold and wet…

A beautiful butterfly house with an opportunity for education tours / workshops. A Town to Sea education centre where people can learn about the wildlife on our doorstep, tides – rip tides/bore tides An entrepreneur centre where local people can create pop ups to sell their crafts – the centre could include a café and […]

The roads are falling apart start there before any grandiose plans

Neighbouring towns

More money being spent in Dalton in furness, roads, parking, parks, leisure facilities, local sports clubs. It has been years since Barrow spent any money in Dalton and the town is struggling.

Youth Club Busses

Use old busses and fit them out with screen in the back of seats, for watching films/playing games. Also have an area for quiet activities (reading/drawing/crafting, etc) Maybe even have someone kids can talk to, if they have any issues, which are worrying them)

Graffiti Walls

A designated area for graffiti ‘artists to create some nice works or murals. This should be a prize for winner/s of a competition, where the Barrow public vote on the best submitted design/s.

Free car parks

Free car parks to encourage shoppers and visitors to the town instead of discouraging them and to shop out of town. Stop business owners/workers blocking in the town centre streets.

Modern day sports stadium

Develop and build a modern day sports stadium for Barrow Raiders RLFC and Barrow AFC to share amongst other sporting and health clubs, this would attract lots of visitors and tourists to the town and stop the weight of the current 2 stadiums expenses and ensure a better team on the pitches to go up […]

Fixing broad band

I love on Abbey Rd and I have aluminium cables for WiFi running to my house, we can’t get anything faster than 65Mbps of internet speed, and considering we pay for that and only get around 32Mbps, it needs fixing

University campus

We need to stop young people leaving the area and not coming back. One of the best ways to do this would be to have a university campus here so young people (and some older people…..) can do a full degree here. Lots of young people would still go away to uni but they should […]

Broadband

All areas of barrow should have fiber optic cables to the house not the street or a few streets over, the internet is one of the most valuable assets of modern daily life

Electric vehicle charging

Provide a pair of rapid electric vehicle chargers, capable of delivering up to 50KW DC on both CHADeMO and CCS connectors. These chargers are essential to the take up of electric vehicles in the UK and access to them encourages visits from electric drivers. The easier it is for people to drive into the town […]

Submarine Heritage Centre

Barrow in Furness will continue to be a backwater for tourism unless a high quality attraction/experience is available to attract and sustain high visitor levels. This should be a bold, new, unique and exciting initiative to reflect Barrow skills, which is building the worlds finest submarines. The opportunity will then be available to tap into […]

School Investment

Schools need a lot more investment in this area. They are having to make budget cuts which result in less staff and weaker education provision for children. At the end of the day education is one of the main factors in the life chances of children.

Promote independent business.

Down south they did this thing where new businesses could get lowered rent for the first yera of business as they rarely make profit first year and high street rent prices are too high. Essentially the council subsidises rent for businesses for the first year.

Shop fronts

Put some of the money in to sorting out shop fronts and run down shops. You will be more likely to get people going to the shops if they looked more modern and not falling apart

Make the town worth visiting

We need a reason to visit the town centre. Plenty of ‘things to do’ once people are in the town centre. A bowling alley, a covered courtyard with a variety of eating places and nice bars, a revamped market area, a cinema or improved theatre facilities and a museum that show off our history all […]

Community

Carry on with the free days, more things for families, encourage outside visitors with themed days like Ulverston Dickensian weekend. Look at the parking; the free parking after 3 extended to full days on certain days in the week maybe a Thursday or a market day. Make it easier for people to just pop into […]

Disability and Health Support

Not enough (any) support for disabled people and people with health conditions who want to work. We need a REMPLOY type service where people learn to make items (which can be sold), develop employability skills and are paid. A sort of publicly owned small manufacturer, and you can only work there if you satisfy strict […]

Town centre

Invest in the town centre and fill the empty shops. The town centre is dying and all the shops are closing. Whether we open a shopping centre and move everyone in there and then make the old building flats or make it more affordable for shops to run and sustain a profitable business. We need […]

Furness Abbey

Make Furness Abbey pedestrianised for cyclist, runners, walkers, add lighting to the ruins, give it some life. Turn Barrow Market into something like the Trinity in Leeds with free parking above. A building like Debenhams could accommodate an M & S inside aswell as a few other shops that are struggling. employ more street cleaners […]

School building refurbishment

I see lots of schools in the local area with run down buildings with poor wiring and piping that is falling apart due to no funding for refurbs. Ensure the older buildings have enough funding to get rid of asbestos and non drop ceilings. Modern infrastructure and technology is needed to ensure the best quality […]

Public transport

Better public transport with improved bus services, if the public transport in Barrow was more frequent, reliable and cheaper it would reduce the parking and traffic flow issues in town aswell as reducing the emissions from single occupancy car use. It would also allow people on lower income jobs to get to work cheaper giving […]

Main streets appearances

Improve the appearances of the main streets in to barrow. Invest money in to painting the house sills on Abbey road, rebuilding fallen down walls, planting more trees. On Park Road invest in trees on the main road to hide the industrial buildings and hide the flats. Visitors get an idea of barrow from the […]

Town Centre

Open up the bottom of Dalton Rd where Wetherspoon’s is to traffic. Install better lighting and a roof on Portland Walk. Better signage directing people to the shopping areas. Build a bus station and redirect some of the routes to allow for easier access. Maybe introduce a park and ride scheme. Make better use of […]

More community hubs in town centre

Using some empty spaces on Barrow’s struggling high street for community activities would improve the well-being of residents and increase footfall in the town centre, hopefully encouraging improved economic fortunes for surrounding businesses. Residents should be asked what activities they would like to have in these centres (eg art classes, book clubs, yoga classes, film […]

Drive Footfall

Review traffic flow through the town centre by changing current routes which have not been altered since Portland Walk was built. Allow traffic to circulate throughout the town centre. Allow bus routes back into the main shopping district of Buccleuch St and Cavendish St areas. Improve and increase the amount of on street, free, car […]

Disability services

After adults with learning disabilities, from the Furness area, leave college (21-23 years old) there are few options for them other than residential care. And as others with family members in this situation would agree, I don’t have enough trust in services to allow my family members to go into residential care. There are a […]

Wellbeing centre

Better facilities for young people to have somewhere to go instead of turning to drink or drugs. Could double as some sort of well-being centre. The facilities in Barrow for dealing with mental health are very poor and there a lot of people who suffer because of this.
