Budget Spending Recommendations

Firstly, it is my belief, that the local council needs to prioritise; revitalising the roads, investing into the town centre and spending more into aiding lower socioeconomic status areas. The roads within Darlington are quite damaged, especially within the DL1 & 2 areas, which mostly are of the lower socioeconomic status areas. This would reduce […]

i feel like adding a football 3g to darlington will help kids grow up in a safe environment instead of causing havoc in the streets drinking alcohol and antisocial behaviour as it will give them something do

Make DL1 a green place.

I would like to suggest an improvement of a more eco friendly atmosphere in Darlington. This could be the addition of planting more trees and taking pride of our green areas in and round Darlington (including villages surrounding) and also we could look into parking on the outside of town and have a park and […]

Traffic light cameras

I witness several cars jump red lights every single day on my commute across town. An investment in cameras on all traffic lights to catch red light jumpers would pay for itself quickly through fines, improve road safety and reduce an ever growing arrogance on the local roads.

Dying town centre

More money needs to be put into attracting other people to the town centre. At the moment, shops can’t afford to stay open and it looks dull and boring. We need less pastry shops and more small businesses with healthier take outs like fatso’s

More for kids

I think this town could have more for the kids so they have something to do instead of hanging the streets like a bowling alley something to keep them out of trouble. More clothes shops to we have loads of take aways n not much else. Starbucks back to would be good

Town centre

People no longer come to Darlington due to lack of shopping, if we stopped charging so much for rent for shops and brought in shops people actually used there would be more people come to the town and cheaper car parking would also make people WANT to come to the town. More events in the […]

Improvement to Darlington

I would suggest to resurface the roads because the potholes in Darlington are terrible also you could aim to get more people into employment without having to go through the job centre because I know through experience the job centre doesn’t push you to get a job, they give you a list of jobs to […]

Public Library

Continue funding all public libraries in the town. I’ve used the main town centre library as an MA student and the satellite in Cokerton as a teacher taking primary school kids in to borrow books. Both are wonderful community resources.

Town centre houses

Repave all town centre streets around Larchfield Street and gate the alleys. Its so dirty and old fashioned. Repaint bondgate shop fronts- they look grim and shabby.Invest in Post House Wynd and restore to former glory and repave. It looks so unloved and worn down. Beautify Northgate and invest in small businesses along there. Darlington […]

Stop smoking signs

I avoid the shops in town and so do many others, because wherever I walk in town, despite it being a “public area”, myself, my wife and my son have to walk through a smog of cigarette and cannabis smoke. Particularly around entrances to Queen street and the cornmill. Improved signage to keep the town […]

Freerunning/Parkour Park

So many town have invested money into these types of parks where the freerunning community all come together and get together to use the park to the fullest and people also travel to these places for events. A parkour park it a healthy thing and a hobby to many people old and young.

Infrastructure and Town Centre

I think traffic congestion is a significant problem in Darlington and a restraint on economic growth in this area. If successful in its bid DBC should consider capacity improvements to the main arterial roads into Darlington such as the A167 North Road and A68 West Auckland Road/Woodland Road. In other towns main routes into the […]

Remember when………

Darlington like many towns used to have a thriving town centre full of a variety of shops, indoor and outdoor markets. Monday and Saturdays outdoor market day, you could hardly move for the number of visitors to the market and surrounding shops. We need desperately to go back to this, bring heart back to the […]

Station area regeneration

The road leading up to the clock tower front of Darlington railway station would benefit hugely from investment. At the moment it is a collection of run-down shops and bars that presents a grimy, neglected aspect to anyone getting off a train and walking down Victoria Road. This is a great shame, as the centre […]

Public transport improvement

The creation of a central bus station, at least stands for each bus and covered waiting with cafe. Increase services especially in rural areas. Free bus to and from station (and airport). Encourage use by increasing parking charges. Choose service provider with professional attitude and all eco powered large fleet. Result – a clean town

Entrance to the town

Improvements need to be made, particularly to Victoria Road and North Road. Victoria Road is one of the first areas visitors see when travelling by train and it really let’s the town down. It would be great to see it full of unique I dependant shops and cafes. Cleaner streets with more plants and flowers […]

Social housing/ Affordable Housing

We need more socail housing and affordable housing. Some have been built in the area but its not enoght. Socail housing is one of the biggest problems in Darlington people are living rough and house prices are unbelievable in the area and getting on the housing ladder is hard. We should use the money for […]

Upgrading housing and green spaces.

Create a scheme to cooperate with residents in the town centre area (working outwards) with small funding to improve exteriors and land surrounding the houses close to town centre, turn roads into single track with dedicated permit bays, pedestrian zones and more greenery, repaving and providing more land for residents with road side terraced houses […]

Tackle Anti-Social behaviour

Provide places and things to do for youths (13-18 year old music nights or clubs that young people actually want to go to) and overall tackle the vast amounts of drunk/drug users on the streets by providing services to keep them safe while they sober up or take them home. Making the streets seem less […]

Mowden Park Rugby

Cooperative working with the club and the council to bring in revenue to the town and provide not only improved facilities for rugby (Darlington had the 2nd largest rugby stadium in the UK), but use that space to its full potential. Bus Routes

Regenerate awful areas

Young people.

Darlington is a great town, but lacks facilities for its youth, who can’t always afford to pay for entertainment. Queen Street

Queen Street’s shops are currently largely empty. It’s a pleasant arcade but depressing and sterile to walk through now. Can something be done to revitalise this area? Perhaps community based enterprises could fill the shops.

Maintenance and heritage

Investment in road maintenance (pot holes) throughout the town. Improve the appearance of the town centre and surrounding areas (ie North road and Victoria road etc) by looking to our heritage, ie Darlington should be similar to York in appearance (conformity of Building facades, etc). Significantly cut back the trees on Victoria embankment to let […]

Children’s service’s

I’d like to suggest there is more services to support vulnerable; children, young people and families. Community support is significantly important in supporting our people who are suffering poverty. Let’s give them hubs to provide, advice support, interventions, stimulation, groups, classes and education. This will reduce the impact of anti-social behaviour in the town, reduce […]

Cycling infrastructure

Whilst the emphasis for cycling has been on commuters in the town in the past, there has been nothing for the many people who venture out of the town into the countryside. Most roads out of the town require cyclists to use busy roads such as the A66, A167, B6276 & A67. Despite requests to […]

Northgate Victoria Roads

Both these main routes into Darlington town centre are old Victorian roads and have buildings that need refurbishing.
