Safe overnight stops for Motorhomes

We travel all over this country watching and writing about pantomimes usually over Christmas. It is a real challenge to park and find places to stay overnight, I contact councils in the towns or cities we are visiting and they have been most helpful. We have now joined CAMpRA (Campaign for Real Aires UK) Please […]

Motorhomes: Cumbria Coastal Tour

How about collaborating with other towns around the Cumbrian coast to set up and market a coastal tourist route for motorhomes. There are more than 350,000 of them in UK and nearly 2 million in Europe where they are a lucrative tourism market and proper facilities are provided. Why don’t we make them welcome by […]

Cycling?

I see nothing in the Workington Town Plan about cyclists; lots of mentions about pedestrians. Workington has one of the most dangerous road systems in Cumbria for cyclists. I suspect none of those involved in the process has ever riden a bike since they were 10….

More than a retail centre

Across Washington St from the shopping centre are two opportunities to really enhance Workington. 1) The old town centre with Market Place and old market hall and the streets leading to it could be a good place for specialist retail and restaurants etc. 2) Hall Park and the Hall and walled garden could be a […]

Youth Centre

Public transport

A bus at 18.30 from workington to Carlisle. The amount of people that have to get 2 buses back or wait up to 2-3 hours between the 17.33 bus and the 19.50 bus is high and everyone I’ve spoke to either cant afford 2 bus trips and cant get the 17.33 because of work times […]

Public houses

The loss of a pub in rural places has a real effect on the community. Support should be given for anyone opening this facility in small villages. It should also be made near impossible to apply for a change of use to make historic pubs into holiday lets.

Trees, plants and green areas

Workington should use Cockermouth as a model on how to look more attractive and appealing to the visitor. The whole town, particularly the town centre needs to be cleaned, modernised and trees planted in the centre. It’s a amazing what trees and ‘natural elements’ do for the general aesthetics and well being of the population. […]

Moorclose

Over many years Moorclose has had assets stripped from it, there is very little left up there! It would be nice to see the area get some investment and deliver for everyone. Social Club with pub games. Skate Park. More Shops. Football pitches & dressing rooms. Improved cycleways. Just to name a few.

Renovate Curwen Hall and parklands

Renovate the derelict Hall. Use it as a hub for activities within the wider park. Toilets, cafe/ resteraunt, museum, cycle hire etc. Others have mentioned a zip wire. This could be installed from the top of the Hall, down to mill field. The park could have pathways improved and marked, wildlife trails, adventure playground for […]

Market Hall

A Town Centre Market Hall with a good variety of stalls would attract more shoppers and give more choice than is currently offered. The existing shops do not provide a variety of businesses, consisting mostly of ‘pound’ shops, charity shops, fast food outlets and mobile phone providers. There are one or two national stores, but […]

Enclosed Dog Parks

Enclosed areas designated as dog parks would enable dogs to be let off the lead safely so that those without gardens can get more exercise without running off. They would also ensure the safety of children and adults walking or cycling as there would be no dogs loose from their owners.

More space for wildlife

In Stainburn, we have several colonies of red squirrels, bats, owls, many different species of birds, butterflies and other wildlife, and this is the case across different areas of Workington. We must ensure that space and mature trees are retained and maintained for wildlife in the Town Plan. To inform local people and attract non-locals […]

Community Hall for Stainburn

There is no sense of community in Stainburn as we have nowhere for people to meet – no local shops, one pub/restaurant with no function rooms, no church, no school hall, no post office. A community hall would give local groups somewhere to meet, would help to reduce isolation and bring the Community together.

Disability play park

I think play parks should have more disabled play equipment like wheelchairs swings and bigger baby swi gs for child with special needs that cant use the big children swings and are to big to fit in the normal baby swings as all children deserve to be able to play on the park.

Demolition to create open spaces

Demolish the tatty old buildings that are of no significance. Create some open spaces, garden areas for those who live in the many terraces with no gardens. More places to eat at night. Buildings tidied up and make use of the space above for people to live in. Bring the pride in the area back. […]

An Art installation?

The Van Gogh Experience is a dramatic show with pictures and video projected onto walls. It draws in thousands of visitors. We have the opportunity to copy this idea for local artists (Percy Kelly, Sheila Fell etc) in a revamped Curwen Hall. It could easily draw in visitors from Keswick and beyond. Process would tie in with iggesund (who’ll take the paper scrap) […]

Radio Workington

This might be regarded as a leftfield suggestion to some, but it would be great if Workington had their own community radio station, as not only would it provide a real voice for the community, but also showcase the diverse range of local talent (musically & culturally). A mountain biking track?

Why do we need to travel to Whinlatter? The Hall Park and Mill Field could be easily developed with a dedicated track through the trees and beside the river. Bikes could even be hired from a revamped Curwen Hall. It could also attract visitors from Keswick and beyond.

Relocate Museum to Curwen Hall

Improved Cycling infrastructure

Let’s try and make Workington a beacon for commuting to work by bikes and walking, by building more and improving the existing poor cycle paths. Surely getting folk out of cars and exercising is going to be beneficial to the Town with a reduction in pollution and less strain on the NHS.
