Southport needs to be different from other coastal resorts if we are to attract visitors. Simply presenting a Victorian seaside image is not sufficient. I would suggest that we make Southport a “food town”. We would seek to attract new restaurants, fast food outlets, specialist food shops (cheese, patisseries, butchers, bakers, wine, book shops etc.. the list is endless). Hopefully these new businesses would fill the empty town centre stores. A regular farmer’s market could be held on a weekly basis promoting local produce. Local breweries could produce Southport-branded products. Everything we seek to introduce into the ton would relate to food. To promote the town further we could produce a water-based show using the Marine Lake which would be free to watch. This would be akin to the one held at Port Aventura in Salou where floats representing dragons, pirate ships, river boats etc. would parade around the lake at night all lit up. It could run for a week at the height of the season
