  1. Thank you for flagging this up as an issue. There is ample evidence that disabled people are far less likely to take part in leisure or community activity. Often barriers are perceived rather than actual, but the overwhelming response from disabled people when DAG runs its Swimming for Wellbeing sessions is that the pool environment is too cold. Also, if you look at all the promotional material at the Leisure Centre it is aimed at those who are fit and able or at families, so no wonder that disabled people do not feel that this is a welcoming environment they can use or that their needs will be understood and catered for.

  2. Improvements in our local swimming pool to make it accessible to all members of the community including the elderly, inform and disabled. Currently the temperature of the environment around the pool and within the changing rooms is too cold for those who have conditions which don’t allow them to move freely. Often the hoist is broken so those who are unable to walk independantly are prevented from accessing the pool. Funding needs to ensure that the pool also offers regular weekly and more frequent session times for those who are unable to attend the general swimming sessions and to ensure the warmth of the environment outside the pool and access to working hoists is available.

Often the hoist is broken so those who are unable to walk independantly are prevented from getting into the pool. This is unacceptable.
